This lesson is based on a role play which appeared in the OAH magazine of history.  The article, available here offers several other creative approaches to the industrial revolution.


In this role-play, students in teams take on the perspective of various working class ethnic workers in Chicago at the turn of the 20th century.

Students explore turn of the 20th century material culture by choosing to examine various primary sources from this period.  Students can choose from Advertisements, Theater Playbills, Film, Music, Radio, Comic Strips, Art Literature, and Toys by navigating through a website.  The websites used in this project are sorted by topic, if you would like to use pieces of this assignment for your own project.
